This is seriously an amazing visual. I always hear people say “healthy food is too expensive”…. well here you go!

I never heard people say “healthy food is too expensive.” It’s always, “ORGANIC food is too expensive.”

This just really makes me want KFC mashed potatoes and gravy. Like, I don’t even care. I haven’t been able to keep anything down today whatsoever but I just want it oh god :’(

Yeah, because that’s what consistent price of food all over the country. I know for a fact that here milk is $3 a gallon, frozen vegetables are about a buck fifty per pound, chicken is lol definitely not that cheap (for that matter, neither is beef). And that’s just off the top of my head. If I could actually purchase food for those prices, maybe my feelings about this would be different, but unless you’re going to do an accurate representation of different areas of the country this is pretty useless. >:(

where the fuck on god’s green earth can you buy all that food for $20, is this the promised land i mean really

another thing that totally raises my hackles about this graphic - i’m not even looking at the top part, forget that entirely - is that yeah, that kind of looks like a lot of food, but when you really think about it, that’s maybe a couple of meals. how many people is that bottom bit going to feed? is that food per day or is that food per week? is anyone aware how little chicken you actually get per pound? the only things that would actually last for a long time with my family would be the oats and the beans, but those would maybe last a couple of weeks. that chicken would be gone within two days, if not two meals. ten pounds of potatoes would be at least five bucks, if not a couple dollars more. and if you think there are coupons for fresh produce, you better tell me because they are rare. i know for a fact that where i live that brand of yogurt costs about three or four dollars, because i buy it nearly every week. we go through milk fast, so i buy a couple of gallons per week.

tl;dr food is fucking expensive. and yeah, it would be awesome if every family could buy fresh produce and meat, but the fact of the matter is that not every family can. making a graphic like this is exceedingly misleading. :(

Yeah, and that doesn’t even take into account the fact that the people buying quick fast food are not only doing it because it’s cheaper but because they likely are including “labor hours” in it. Not because you’re lazy but if you’re a single mom, or even a two parent household with kids, and people have crazy schedules trying to make ends meet, when you get home, it’s exhausting to try and go “ok cool, I just got home from my shitty job, you’re hungry, let me prep and cook for an hour instead of spending any time relaxing or spending time with the family.”

Like, aside from the fact that WHERE IS THIS THAT THEY’RE BUYING EIGHT EARS OF CORN AND A POUND OF PEACHES FOR UNDER THREE DOLLARS (and that there are cheaper chicken places than KFC, like Popeye’s), part of it is the work involved. I have a coworker who works fulltime, goes to school full time, her husband until recently had the opposite shift from her, and they have a child with autism who needs extra help. And, she does do all the cooking. And sleeps…occasionally. Do you think they get McDonalds occasionally? I bet they do.

Also, the KFC deal is a terrible reflection of most poor people’s eating habits. Yes, poor people eat unhealthy things because they are cheap but let’s redirect this toward more realistic statements, right? Here:

In Chicago:

1 large Little Caesar’s pizza $5

4 Burgers from the Dollar Menu at any Restaurant $5

Enough Spaghetti w/ Hunt’s Tomato Sauce to Feed 4 $3.50

JUST the yogurt in the picture above $4

JUST the peas (2 bags) from the picture above $3-4

So what am I saying? I’m saying that a family of four can eat pizza and hamburgers and spaghetti every damned day and never top $70 a week for groceries and that’s it’s out of your mind insanely more expensive to actually feed an entire family for an entire week on that stuff from that infographic.

My typical grocery bill looks like this:

6 Greek yogurts $7.75

8 Frozen Dinners (I work nights and so am often not able to cook those days) $16

1 Package Spaghetti $1

1 Can Tomato Sauce $1

1 Box Popsicles, Real Fruit $3.50

1 lb Whatever Fruit Is On Sale $3-4

1 lb Fake Meat $1.99 (thanks to Trader Joes or it would be twice that)

1 Bag Whatever Vegetables Are On Sale $2-4

1 lb Cheese $2-3

1 Loaf of the Cheapest Bread $1

For about $45 I feed 2 people for an entire week. Not a night or two like the one above, but a week. 7 days. I live on frozen food, which I’m sure will one day kill me. But you know what? Between the time it would take me to make food and clean dishes while working 10 hour long overnight shifts with a 1 hour commute each way, meaning half of my day is dedicated to working and the fact that I’m broke and fresh, even frozen, veggies cost money, I can’t. I just can’t. It would be affordable if I had the time and the energy to visit a farmer’s market every week but even then, I’d have to trek halfway across town to do it and there are some people in areas where even that option is literally impossible.
