I wish we said “fancy” in America. As in, “I fancy you.” It’s such a more agreeable term than “I have a crush on you.” What’s a crush? Like, I AM A BOA CONSTRICTOR AND I AM GOING TO IMMOBILIZE YOU WITH MY MISPLACED AND OBSESSIVE AFFECTION. “I fancy you” is like, you’re so shiny and glittery and…

Yeah I say things like “fancy a pint” or something and even my husband is like “wtf?” …

Wait, Americans don’t say “fancy” like that? I’ve been doing it wrong for years. And will probably continue to.

..Jack, I don’t mean this as a judgement or insult to you, just a comment in general, but as a British person I do have to say I really judge Americans when I hear them use clearly English slang like “fancy” or “mate” if they haven’t spent a significant amount of time in the country (my sister in law came here from the states about 5 years ago now, and it still sounds weird when she uses English slang; she laughs at herself when she does it.) It feels fake, pretentious, and a little bit mocking; but most of all incredibly affected.

Also, to be honest, increasingly in England we just say “like;” “fancy” is primarily a childish expression, used by people in their very early teens. If an adult were to say “I really fancy him” people would think they were being a little facetious.

:( This makes me sad. Just the part about it being affected and pretentious to use British slang. I use it because almost all of my friends are from the UK and so I pick up British (and Welsh and Scottish) slang from them because I hear it more often. I really rarely speak to Americans except at work so in contexts where slang is used, it’s around people who speak that way. Most of the television I watch is BBC as well so… that’s what I hear. If people do it non-stop I think that’s an entirely different thing but when it pops up in casual conversation I think it’s more a reflection of the fact that internet culture has made language less regional and more international - people all over the world pick up terms that are used by friends in other areas.
