This is exactly how I feel about the commercialization of Valentine’s Day and the misogyny of the “romance” it instills in people, but I’m still wearing red and pink tomorrow because I never miss a chance to dress up. Unless it’s spirit week.

Commercial holidays are what you make of them. You can use it as a chance to buy cards and chocolates and lingerie and make reservations to expensive restaurants - or you can take advantage of the reminder to do what you should do every day and tell the people you love that they are special, they are beautiful, they are good and kind and wonderful and you’re glad to have them in your life. I try to do this more often that just Valentine’s Day but it’s good to have that little cue to tell people you care.

You don’t have to just do this with romantic partners, you can tell friends and family. And you don’t have to have a huge date, you can order take out and curl up in front of netflix or curl up together for an impromptu nap. Things aren’t black and white and while marketing is pervasive, you can enjoy the holiday without bowing to those who want you to see it as another opportunity to spend.
